Strippers: America’s Indicator Species
In this space, Chia will go through the local history and share insight into the world of the stripping. She will illuminate the crucial roles sex workers play in the rise, development, and dispersion of societies, with special focus on the rise and development of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
Through her experiences in the past four years as a nationally touring burlesque artist, industry entrepreneur, and local producer, Chia is passionate about removing the veil of obscurity that surrounds the sex work industry in hopes of preventative harm reduction for industry* members & participants, emphasizing the voices and importance of the role industry* members play in our social ecosystem, and ensuring that this hi(story) is not forgotten.
Participants will learn about how strippers and other industry* members act as indicator species for the social and economic health of a community and the ways the Twin Cities have historically relied on sex work for infrastructural growth. There will be plenty of opportunities for participants to ask questions, gain familiarity with the history and current status of the industry*, and to reflect on their own relationship with the industry* and industry* members.
Chia
Known by many as the Minnesotan Mouthful, Chia is an anthropologist by trade and thrives within the intersections and nuances uniquely positioned in fringe spaces of sex work, advocacy, and performance art. For the past four years, Chia has been a nationally touring burlesque artist and producer.
Through observations in mainstream urban and rural strip clubs, captivation techniques on stage at burlesque shows, teaching pole & stripper education, curating desire + community focused events; Chia is radicalizing and normalizing relationships with(in) nudity & sexuality by drawing attention to the crucial roles sex workers play in the rise, development, and dispersion of societies.
She’s fond of anthologies, theory, frogs, and humans. She spends her free time curating community, being silly, tending to her pets/garden, or comfortably stuck in your dad’s teeth.
